Friday, October 30th, 2009Bikram? Zumba? You want me to do what?
Wednesday, October 28th, 2009Whenever winter starts, I always feel the need to shake up my life a little bit to help me get through the long, snowy months. At first, I thought my friend was absolutely bananas when she suggested that I mix up my routine and try Bikram Yoga with her. You want me to do whaaat? And in 105 degree heat? No, thank you. I’m busy that day.
Now, I’m still a Florida girl at heart. I’m accustomed to the heat, but my normal workout routine typically consisted of me turning up the volume on my iPod to max and running until my heart felt like it was going to explode out of my chest. Fun, right? You can imagine my hesitation to completely alter my daily routine, but I went anyway, trying to be open to a new experience. Now I know how it feels be a pretzel … a hot, sweaty pretzel baking in a toaster. I gave it three weeks (a fair shot, I think) until I threw in the towel, literally.
Two weeks later my sister signed us up for Zumba class, a dance-like workout class to hypnotic Latin rhythms. Curious, I checked out the website, and to my surprise, the first thing I read was, “Ditch the workout, join the party!” I don’t know about you, but my definition of a party doesn’t involve gyrating to African beats in a sweaty room filled with only women. After an hour of awkward movements and embarrassing butt twitches, I laughed hysterically and bowed out, taking my uncoordinated hips with me.
Next on my list: Indoor rock climbing. Maybe I’ll wait until after Halloween. I need to be alive to witness the many Michael Jacksons, Heath Ledgers and people that actually think they’re vampires at the PortSports Nightmare on Fore Street Halloween Bash.

My TV picks for the Fall season.
Monday, October 26th, 2009Well, it happened! The “it” I was most afraid of. The “it” that would be the death of my television viewing heaven. The “it” that would take the remote control out of my hands. The “it”… ok, you get the idea! My husband is now working first shift. A part of me is super happy that we are now working the same-ish hours, something that hasn’t happened in years. We can spend lots of time together, eat dinner together… But the TV-loving part of me is very sad.
This fall season I told myself that I wanted to watch at least one new show from each network. I’m trying my best, but with my new television watching obstacle, it’s putting a heavier than normal strain on my TiVo. But enough whining out of me! Here are my picks for this fall…
ABC - Modern Family & Cougar Town, Wednesdays, 9pm-10pm
Modern Family is one of the funniest new sitcoms I’ve seen in a while. The cast is great! Ty Burrell plays Phil, who fancies himself the “cool dad” claiming to know all the “lingo” – you know LOL, laugh out loud, OMG, oh my God, and WTF, why the face! Cougar Town is good, but I’m having a hard time with Courteney Cox’s obnoxiousness. I do love the supporting cast though, so that makes up for her loud mouth. I find myself laughing out loud watching these two shows.
CBS - Three Rivers, Sundays, 9pm-10pm
This was an easy choice. I’ve loved Alex O’Loughlin since his short stint as a vampire private detective in Moonlight a few years ago. While I need another medical drama like I need a hole in the head, this one is different. It focuses on organ donors, transplant patients, and the surgeons who perform the transplants. I’m having a hard time making the character transition from vampire PI to world-renowned surgeon. But I still enjoy the show. And I still miss Moonlight!
CW - The Vampire Diaries, Thursdays, 8pm-9pm
It’s not a huge secret that I’m obsessed with all things vampire so when I saw the promos for this show, I immediately scheduled it into my Thursday night. It’s the story of two vampire brothers – one good, one very, very bad – trying to blend into their town. The show is based on the book series by LJ Smith, which I’m thinking I must read now. Why do I feel like I’m cheating on Twilight?
FOX - Glee, Wednesdays, 9pm-10pm
This show is my new guilty pleasure! I really thought I would hate a show about a high school glee club, but the characters are amazing. And the writing is hysterical. How can you go wrong with Jane Lynch (Best in Show) as Sue Sylvester, the cheerleading coach constantly trying to take down the glee club?!
NBC – Mercy, Wednesdays, 8pm-9pm
Yet another medical drama… but this is not your mother’s ER. The show centers around nurse Veronica who has recently returned to work from a tour in Iraq and knows more about medicine than most of the residents. James Tupper of Men in Trees fame (another show I miss terribly) plays the new doctor who shares a past with Veronica. A little Grey’s-ish but so far, so good.

I’m famous.
Friday, October 23rd, 2009(Seriously. I didn’t know I was, but I am.)
I’ve had a Twitter account for quite some time. I hardly ever use it because I’m bombarded with “followers” every day. Nooooo…I’m not bragging! I love social networking, don’t get me wrong. Honestly, Facebook has become my second job, but the thought of going through and checking out all of my potential followers on my twitter account seemed daunting!
I finally caved and asked one of my co-workers how she managed all her tweets and followers. She looked at me puzzled.
“I don’t understand”, she asked.
“You know, all of the requests you get on Twitter.” I told her.
She stared there with a blank look – she almost always has that look on her face!
I then proceeded to tell her I get over 30 requests a day. She apparently only gets 2 a month. I knew then there was a big problem! Thank goodness she’s a Twilight freak and helped me crack the code. (You know the teenage-girl, vampire movie craze?) Anyway, apparently one of the characters shares my same name. I’m in the system as @NikkiReedJarvais. And Rosalie, the character, is played by Nikki Reed, the actress. Problem solved. Feel free to tweet me if you aren’t a crazy teenage girl looking for Rosalie – I’m already friends with too many of them!

Life without the Internet
Thursday, October 22nd, 2009“…It’s the not-to-distant future. They’ve turned off the Internet. After the riots have settled down and the withdrawal symptoms have faded, how would you cope?”
